I especially loved the early chapters with their depiction of life in the North Carolinan Appalachians in the 19th century. After that, I enjoyed the way the story was presented as a police detective mystery (even though Strock doesn't really do much but be there). It's all a bit cliched by today's standards but I was willing to get in the retro mood. The part that bothered me most was the radical change in Robur's character and aims from the earlier book (Robur the Conqueror). I thought that could have been better explained.
